With the rise of AI writing platforms, online publishing tools, video technologies, content development has become widely democratized. With a lower barrier of entry to high-quality content development, having the best content is no longer enough to connect with your audience. 

For content organizations, the focus must shift to creating engaging, community-driven learning experiences that are accessible and relevant to learners' busy lives.

Educators have always collected “data” to guide instruction and to garner feedback. Like an iceberg, instructors combine the surface level—attendance, homework, test scores—with what’s below the surface—body language, facial expressions, and eye contact. Together, these data points create a picture of learner engagement and comprehension.

However much of this below-the-surface feedback got lost in the shift to online learning. Many technology providers prioritized surface-level usage analytics—tracking whether students opened materials or clicked on links—over deeper insights, or “learner analytics.” 

Too often, we accept that passive, isolated learning with minimal interaction from peers or instructors is an unavoidable trade-off in online learning; that we have to sacrifice experience for convenience. 

New technology and platforms have made it so we no longer have to accept this trade-off in areas like e-commerce and social media. So why do we accept it in something as important as education? 

It’s time to expect more.
